Every pet owner has to deal with the occasional indoor”injury” whether it’s prior to a young pet is properly housetrained, consequences of an illness, the aging of a pet or just an overly excited or stressed pet which may have less control. What no owner has to deal with, however, is the smell from urine accidents. With the steps, it is easy to control odors and remove pet urine smell entirely.
Based on the frequency of accidents, health and a pet’s diet, urine smells can become overpowering. Fortunately, there are easy ways to eliminate those odors…
When a pet has an accident, it’s vital to soak up as much urine as possible as fast as possible. Use paper towels and dab or blot the puddle, but do not smear it or else more distance will get stained and contaminated. If the puddle is on cloth or carpet, use pressure. So there are no scents the paper towel should be disposed of immediately, preferably in an outdoor trash can.
Enzymatic cleaners will break down the molecules of pet urine to eliminate odors. There are several types available, and they should be used based on the proper instructions. Use the cleaners as stains.
Baking soda naturally neutralizes odors. Sprinkle it liberally on the moist area or urine stain and work the powder gently into the fibers of rug any cloth or carpet. Let the baking soda sit overnight for odor absorption, then vacuum it up to remove the smell.
Any urine smells will be stronger when they are fresh and moist, and the longer fabrics remain damp, the stronger the smell will seem. Carpeting, rug or the cloth must be thoroughly dried after cleaning up the puddle. Use a fan to improve air circulation, and open windows if possible to help air circulate to minimize odors.
If new puddles have been cleaned up but scents stay, it’s possible there are old, smelly stains around. Use a black light to see urine stains on carpets and fabrics, and treat them with baking soda, cleaners and other treatments that are odor-eliminating.
When a blot is older or deeper in a rug or carpet, a strong carpet cleaning may be necessary. Use only cold water with this cleaning (higher temperatures can bond the urine to the cloth so it can’t be removed), and add an enzymatic cleaner to get more thorough breaking down of odor-causing proteins. Allow the area to dry thoroughly, after vacuuming.
there might be times where there have been numerous accidents or the pet’s health can make it tough to completely remove odors or prevent future unwanted puddles. It may be best to remove fabrics that can soak up urine – it will be easier to remove urine scents from linoleum or tile flooring instead of fabrics.
Pet urine gets on more than flooring, and stains that are left on walls, furniture legs or draperies can continue to smell long after the floor was cleaned. Likewise incontinent pets can”leak” in their bedding. Sprays on other things or when a pet urinates, deodorized and they need to be cleaned as thoroughly as the ground or the odors will linger.
Professional carpet and fabric cleaning solutions have stronger equipment and therefore are better able to detect and remove old urine stains which may still smell. While it may be expensive to hire a professional cleaning service, it may be worthwhile areas need treatment or if many stains need to be eliminated.
Even if a pet urinates in the proper area, occasional near-misses can cause odors to linger and grow stronger. Wash puppy pad area, the litter box or similar location using deodorizing agents needed and cleaners. Bear in mind that some odors that are tiny may well remain in this area and can help remind your pet about the right area for their business.
Once a pet is housebroken, their training shouldn’t be over. Regular refreshers for their potty training can help reinforce where it’s suitable for them to urinate. Scheduling more frequent or letting outside more often walks and potty breaks can help minimize accidents that would lead to unwanted odors.
While an animal’s urine naturally smells – these scent markers help designate territory – a very strong odor or abrupt odor change may indicate health problems. A change in diet may affect the odor of urine and offering. If a bad smell persists, consult a veterinarian to research any other or digestive problems or health difficulties.
Dealing with odors and urine accidents is part of being a pet owner, but it’s possible to eliminate the smells and keep your home pet-friendly and fresh at the identical time by taking several actions to minimize those odors.
While being a pet owner has many benefits, unfortunately there may be a few downsides as well; among the worst being the smell of pet urine in a carpet.
If you own a cat or dog that has had an accident (or more than one), here are some suggestions you can try to get the smell of urine out of the carpet.
This is probably among the most popular and actually cheapest options. Vinegar neutralizes the smell of urine. Simply mix one part vinegar and one part water. (How much you decide to mix depends on the size of the spot that should be cleaned.)
Pour it directly on the area and let it soak the carpet, the underlying pad and sub floor. Let is sit for a minimum of 30 minutes. Then, for those who have a little carpet machine (like the green machine) you can draw the moisture out. If not, use clean white paper towels or white bath towel and apply pressure to get the moisture upward. (Don’t use colored towels since you do not wish to move any color to your rug.) Get as much of the moisture upward as possible. While the area might smell like vinegar for some time, when it dissipates the smell of urine will be eliminated.
Luckily many pet shops sell products made exactly for the purpose of finding the pet urine smell of out of carpets. One of the most popular seems to be a product called Nature’s Miracle. Just about everyone I know who has used it swears by it. There are other products too such as Out! , Kids’n’ Pets and Odo Ban which you can try.
Another popular product to use is Oxiclean. You probably might even have this product in your house already. Simply follow the instructions on the container to make sure the proper cleaner/water ratio and apply to carpet. (It is quite important however to try this specific product in a tiny unnoticeable spot because it has been proven to slightly discolor carpets, so be sure to use on a test area first.)
While this might seem like an unusual solution, many people swear that it works for them too. Simply put dry, unused coffee grounds on the affected area and leave for about 12 hours. Vacuum up the grounds and take the smell away with it. If any remnant of smell still exists, repeat the process.
Listerine is another household item you can try. Simply mix one part Listerine with two parts water and spray on the affected area. Let sit for about an hour and then soak up with clean paper towels or white bath towel. The place might smell like Listerine for awhile, but that will clear up fairly quickly or you can try spraying Febreeze on it right after.
Another thing to try is getting your carpet steam cleaned. Many professional steam cleaners have a solution that is made to help get out urine odors so if your problem is very severe, you might want to call in a specialist.
