Whether you are catching up over coffee, skipping through Netflix shows or relaxing with family, sofas offer the perfect resting spot.
However, as careful as you might be, there’s no avoiding the stains, spillages and dirt that build up with regular use (or the terrible smell and discolouration that include it).
But do not fill your shopping trolley with expensive fabric cleaning products just yet. To give your upholstery with a fresh lease of life, all it takes is a few organic ingredients – many of are in your kitchen cupboard.
Have a look at the best natural ways to clean a cloth sofa, below.
Before you get started with some of the methods below, it’s worth checking the individual cleaning codes of your sofa fabric (usually found on the underside of your couch cushions).
To make sure you’re giving your couch a sufficient deep wash, the first thing you should do is remove any crumbs or dirt from both the outside and in-between the couch cushions (you may want to wear gloves).
To do this, you’ll need a clean, dry cloth. With the cloth in hand, brush the upholstery, ensuring you reach into all the nooks and crannies. For areas, such as stains|spots that are dried-on}, you may need to use a brush.
TOP TIP: If your fabric couch is lightly colored, you will want to use a white cloth. The dye out of the cloth could soak into the fabric on cause discolouration and your couch.
By their nature, couch fibers have a propensity to cling to smells from critters, spillages and – ahem – organic gases. When entertaining guests, over time, this can develop.
While you could mask the smell with a upholstery deodoriser, this only offers a temporary solution, and you could be back where you started. Instead, an easy-to-make cloth cleaner that is natural should try to eliminate smells permanently.
For many their cosiness, fabric sofas aren’t the best at repelling heavy stains or spillages. Anyone who has knocked a glass of red wine onto their favorite sofa knows this reality all too well. Thankfully, there are ways to clear up stubborn stains without the need for chemical solutions that are demanding.

Take a teaspoon of washing-up liquid, white vinegar, baking soda and warm water and mix together into a lather (the mixture should froth up as the baking soda and vinegar react with one another).
Then, apply directly to any spots or smudges which you can spot on your cloth sofa. Leave to dry out for around 10 minutes.
When it’s dry, wipe the surface with a clean cloth to lift away any residue – you ought to be left with a gorgeous stain-free sofa. You’re welcome!
TOP TIP: Baking soda and white vinegar is a professional cleaning combination for any tough stain. This is because the baking soda reacts with the vinegar to make an acidic formula which gently cuts through grease and dirt.
TOP TIP: This method is also superb as a natural carpet cleaner. Mix together and apply to carpet stains for a new look.
If your cloth couch has faced years of tear and wear, cleaning might not be enough to restore it. In these cases, you should think about reupholstering your couch or, if you do not have any cleaning products to hand, using a sofa cover to hide unsightly, stubborn stains.
